    The Challenge

This project involved a complete design renovation provided by the client, which was required to be compliant with WCAG standards of accessibility, as HOFOR is a public institution. Aiming to enhance both functionality and user experience, other key goals included:

    1. Design Renovation: Implement a modern, user-friendly design provided by the client.
    2. WCAG Compliance: Ensure the website meets Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) to serve all users, including those with disabilities.
    3. Content Migration: Transition existing content from the old WordPress site to the new Gutenberg editor.
    4. Custom Module Development: Create specific modules within the provided theme, using Muffin Builder (Page Builder) for enhanced functionality and interaction.
    5. API Integration: Display real-time customer consumption statistics on the website.

    Approach

We integrated the custom design provided by HOFOR into the existing WordPress theme, developing modules within the Muffin Page Builder. Recognizing the importance of accessibility for a public institution, we prioritized WCAG compliance by implementing features such as text alternatives, keyboard accessibility, adequate color contrast, and screen reader compatibility.

    Technical Details

To meet HOFOR’s specific functional requirements, we focused on finding the most optimal and efficient solutions. Our technical approach included:

    • Creating custom PHP, CSS and JavaScript to match the provided design specifications within the child theme.
    • Extracted content from the legacy system and developed a Python script that facilitates bulk migration onto the new Gutenberg editor, ensuring data integrity (over 1.000 posts and 10.000 images).
    • Implementing a robust authentication mechanism to securely access the API.
    • Developing a custom middleware to manage API requests and responses efficiently.

    Results

The project resulted in a contemporary, accessible, and user-friendly website, that did not only modernized HOFOR’s digital presence but also significantly improved their ability to serve and engage with their community, aligning with their mission of sustainable and efficient utility management.
