    The challenge

GreenMobility aimed to improve their online presence and user experience across multiple European countries. Here are the objectives and the project overview:

    1. Implement a robust WordPress setup to manage GreenMobility’s car-sharing services across various European countries.
    2. Configure each country site within the network with localized content and language versions.
    3. Create a seamless user experience with IP-based redirection to the appropriate country page.
    4. Design a user-friendly landing page for users to manually select their preferred country site. Also ensure both automated and manual navigation options are available to enhance user experience.

    Approach

We installed and configured WordPress Multisite to allow the creation of multiple sites as subdomains under a single WordPress installation (e.g., no.greenmobility.com, fi.greenmobility.com).

On top of that, we used the WPML (WordPress Multilingual) plugin to manage language versions for each country site, as it provides robust features for translating content and managing multilingual setups. Additionally, we set up a language switcher on each site, allowing users to easily switch between available languages for their country.

    Technical Details

    • GeoIP Detection: Integrated a GeoIP detection service using the MaxMind GeoIP2 database to determine the user’s location based on their IP address. To assure accuracy and speed, we implemented server-side caching for GeoIP lookups to reduce latency and ensure fast redirection. Regularly updated the GeoIP database to maintain accuracy.
    • Redirection Logic: Developed a custom plugin to handle the redirection logic. This plugin checks the user’s IP address, determines the appropriate country site, and redirects them accordingly.
    • Country Selection Page: We designed a user-friendly and responsive landing page that lists all available country sites. This involved developing a new module within the Fortun’s theme, which extended editing fields and provided the client with full control in WP Bakery (page builder).

    Results

The custom setup for GreenMobility’s WordPress Multisite was successfully implemented, providing a scalable and efficient way to manage their international presence. The landing page effectively serves as a central hub, guiding users to the correct local site and enhancing their overall satisfaction.
